Going digital is not a luxury, it’s a necessity

Going digital is not a luxury, it's a necessity

It has been taught to many of us either by coaches, experts and our own life experiences that if a business owner wants to stay in business, she has to think 5 steps ahead.

You need to have a strategy, a method to implement this set strategy and a fail safe for when things go wrong. But after committing to all these “must do’s” you know what stood out in these past couple of months?

“Almost no business owner was prepared or had a plan B for the COVID-19 crisis”.

Fool me once, okay. But twice? Shame on me!

If you are a business owner or an entrepreneur in the Caribbean region, when the COVID-19 crisis struck, it most probably hit your business and paralyzed it straight to its core. There is no denying it. Even the toughest world economies out there are suffering tremendously from this crisis. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have dubbed this as a crisis anyways.

“Point is, no one saw this coming, so no one was prepared for it. And that’s – let me be careful here – fine.”

What is unfortunate however, is the fact that now when some lock down measures in several countries are being softened, many business owners are tossing this behind their back as “a thing of the past”. Instead of investing in a strategy, and checking out the possibilities of creating a fail safe for tomorrow, many of us are just going back to being… unprepared! And I don’t blame you. Right now we are trying to bite through the consequences of the paralysis we had due to the lock downs. But we have to move on, we have to think ahead before it’s too late.

Some of you are probably in total disagreement and will click away back to your daily routines, but before you do. Just read this unasked advice:

“If you want to be prepared, or at least soften the impact of the other crises lurking behind the COVID-19 in the upcoming years? GO DIGITAL!”

Why go digital?

Going digital opens up doors for you as a business owner. The whole world is on the internet and you are reading this right now thanks to the internet.

Before the crisis struck, the trend of more people using the internet was already a fact; internet usage has been rising since the first day of its invention. And in times of crisis, according to Cloudflare and Forbes “people use the internet even more, 70% more than usual”. (see graph)

The reason for consumers to use the internet even more is summarized in one word, “convenience”. Using the internet is cheap, easy and satisfactory; they get to talk to their family and friends from a distance, have entertainment at their finger tops, socialize with just a swipe, save time when browsing for what they need and shop without the hassle of driving from one store to another.

As a B2C business in the Caribbean, tapping into the possibilities the internet offer, is both a fail safe for tomorrow and a boost to your business. Howso?

Going digital broadens your market reach

Going digital is an investment for the long term. As stated above, more and more people will use the internet during and after times of crisis. Investing in the digital eco-system will only broaden the chances of you reaching the right audience at the right time as you will appear in their search endeavours online when they’re most willing to purchase from you.

Second, it doesn’t matter what type of products or services you offer. Going digital will give you the possibility to present your business to the rest of the world. It will give you the possibility to sell to another market when your local selling ground fails to reach the expected amount of revenue or profit.

Lastly, taking a leap in the digital world can even grant you the possibility to broaden your product range if you so desire to cater to a specific market in another country.  Your products will be showcased on a 24/7 basis to the world, and your shop will be able to sell even when you are in your bed dreaming about your perfect day off.

Cost of sales stay constant, while revenue increases

In times of crisis, business owners tend to cut costs of production and/or sales as much as possible to cope with the lower demands. If we take the most recent COVID-19 crisis, it made it impossible for shop owners to sell to their respective markets as it forced several lock down measures down our throats. Almost everybody agree that COVID-19 caused shop owners to not be able to sell anymore as they were forced to shut down business, but is it really true?

Not really. It’s valid for only business owners who don’t have their own selling platform or made part of an online marketplace to showcase their products. When internet usage rose with 70% due to COVID-19, some businesses with their products online, had to broaden their inventories due to the increase of demand.

According to bigcommerce.com, “e-commerce sales rose by 28.5%” during the crisis in March 2020.” (read the whole article here). Though some businesses had to pay their rents for their unused physical stores, they survived by covering it with the revenue made of online sales. Isn’t that a win-win situation?

Connects you to your customers on a personal level

Having your products and services on an online platform makes it possible for you to better connect with your customers. As a business with its products online, customers get more time to carefully understand what your business and products are all about, and why you and your products are the solutions to their problems.

In order to buy, customers have to be persuaded. When they visit your physical store, you have only a certain time frame to convince them why your products are the best. Your shop assistant will have to be able to answer their questions, take away all their doubts and convince them to purchase.

Going digital makes it possible for you to get seen as an authority figure as you tell more about you and your products. It gives you the possibility to befriend your customers as you provide them enough information and assistance throughout their buying process. And it allows you to provide evidence to your customers that you’re the real deal by presenting them with reviews from other users just like them who bought your products.

Can you believe that all this load of information is received by your potential customers when they are browsing your products online? And this happen without any rush. It happens in the comfort of their home, in their own precious time and on their own pace.
